Welcome to Antigua and Barbuda

The easygoing English-speaking people who call Antigua and Barbuda home have a reputation for humor, hospitality and a "no problem"  attitude towards life. Visitors to these shores rarely want to leave and are usually planning to return even before they takeoff.

Over the years Antigua it self has become very important as the hub of the Eastern Caribbean and V.C. Bird International Airport has seen a tremendous increase in the number of services from North America and Europe.

It is also very easy to visit neighboring Caribbean Islands while comfortably based here. Facilities in Antigua and Barbuda are also being developed to add variety to life. There is a great range of Hotel from world famous luxury resorts to homely little establishments where the owner knows everybody by name and the famous stay by incognito.

The capital of St. John's also has two exciting waterfront developments for you to explore. The sunniest of the Eastern Caribbean Islands, Antigua is also the largest of the English-speaking Leeward Islands, about 14 miles long and 11 miles wide.

With 365 white sand beaches, Antigua claims to have one for every day of the year. The island is a must-see destination for scuba divers and snorkellers, who come from around the globe to explore the breathtaking nearly unbroken wall of coral reef that surrounds the island.

Once known as the "gateway to the Caribbean" because of its location and natural harbors, Antigua is dotted with reminders of its nautical past, from Nelson's Dockyard, one of Antigua's finest physical assets, built by Horatio Nelson in the eighteenth century, to the beautifully restored Redcliffe Quay. More than 100 picturesque stone windmills, some now housing bars, shops, restaurants, and homes, serve as a testament to Antigua's role in the sugar trade.

It's always summer in Antigua, with temperatures rarely falling below 25C, or exceeding 30C. Most of the island's water comes from the desalination plant and is potable, but bottled water is widely available everywhere. The local currency, the EC$, is pegged to the US$ (EC$2.60 = US$1) and can be obtained from banks or ATMs island-wide. Most establishments welcome US$ cash or travelers cheques, and major credit cards are widely accepted.
